Stickney Observatory

Stickney Observatory Rebecca Stickney entered Bennington College as a first year student in 1939, during the college's eigth year of operation. She graduated as a science major in 1943. Rebecca left Bennington and went to work at Harvard Medical School, but her love for Bennington proved to be her passion, and she returned in 1948 as Alumnae Secretary.

Rebecca was committed to those who studied, taught, and worked at Bennington. She continued to give back to Bennington College through many of her roles. She often labored with the grounds crew planting trees, working with the farm, and maintaining the 15 bluebird houses she placed around the fields and meadows. She will be truly missed.

Stickney Observatory Stickney Observatory was dedicated to Rebecca B. Stickney ('43) in 1992 after the campus was expanded. Stickney Observatory houses a 16-inch computerized dome telescope and ground Zhumell Dobsonian telescopes (6, 8, and 12 inches respectively).

Recently we have added an all-sky camera mounted on the east side of the observatory (i.e. opposite side of dome) that sticks up just above the roof. We have an IP address and DNS server that is only accessible on Benningtin server (for now), but can be found under the "Resources" tab.
